The Site Decides This, Not Your Preference

Most people arrive with a preference — usually swing, because it is what they picture when they imagine a driveway gate. Then the driveway gets measured and the answer changes. This is one of the few fencing decisions where the site genuinely makes the call and taste comes second.

Three measurements settle it. How much depth is there between the gate line and the street, how much clear run is there along the boundary to one side, and how much does the driveway rise or fall through the gate opening. Everything below follows from those three numbers.

Take them before you fall in love with a design. A beautiful swing gate on a driveway that cannot accommodate the swing is a problem no amount of hardware will solve, and the discovery is much cheaper made with a tape measure than after installation.

Swing Gates: Simple, Cheaper, Space-Hungry

A swing gate hinges open like a door, as a single leaf or a pair. It is mechanically the simplest option, generally the most affordable, and the one with the fewest components to go wrong. For a level driveway with room to open, it is very hard to beat.

The space requirement is the catch, and it is bigger than people expect. The gate sweeps an arc, and that whole arc has to stay clear. On a short driveway, a car waiting to be let in sits directly in the swing path — which means you either open the gate before pulling up, or reverse back into the street to let it open. Both get old fast.

Double leaves halve the depth each leaf needs, which is why they are so common on residential driveways. Opening outward toward the street is generally not an option, since a gate swinging into a footpath or road is both a hazard and usually not permitted.

Slope: Where Swing Gates Simply Fail

This is the constraint that catches out the most Auckland properties, because so many driveways rise from the street. A swing gate travels through an arc at a fixed height above its hinge point. If the ground rises through that arc, the gate will hit it.

The workarounds are all compromises. You can hang the gate high enough to clear the highest point, which leaves an awkward gap under the gate at the low end. You can use rising-butt hinges that lift the gate as it opens, which helps with modest slopes and adds cost and complexity. You can regrade a section of driveway to create a level pad through the opening, which works well and is real construction.

Or you can slide. A sliding gate moves horizontally along the boundary and never travels over the driveway surface at all, so the driveway's slope becomes almost irrelevant to the gate. On a genuinely sloping entrance, sliding is not the more sophisticated choice, it is usually the only sensible one.

Sliding Gates: What 'Run-Off Space' Really Means

A sliding gate needs somewhere to go when it opens, and that is the constraint people underestimate. As a rule of thumb you need a clear run along the boundary of roughly the width of the opening, and for cantilever systems — which carry the gate on a counterbalanced tail rather than a ground track — you need meaningfully more than the opening width.

That run has to be genuinely clear, and clear at the height the gate travels. A garden bed is fine. A power pole, a letterbox, a retaining wall, a mature tree, a heat pump unit or a neighbour's boundary structure is not. Walk the run and look at it as the path of a moving object rather than as a stretch of fence.

Track systems run on a rail set into the driveway and handle heavy gates well, but the track must stay clear of stones and debris or the gate jams. Cantilever systems avoid the ground track entirely, which is excellent where debris or drainage across the opening would be a problem, at the cost of needing more run-off length and a more substantial supporting structure.

Automation: Plan the Power Before the Gate

Both types automate well, and on a busy road the convenience of not getting out of the car in the rain is the main reason people fit a driveway gate at all. Sliding gates are often felt to give the smoother automated operation, though modern swing motors are very good.

The mistake to avoid is treating automation as a later upgrade. Running power to a gate after the driveway and fence are finished means trenching through completed work, and the cost difference between doing it during construction and doing it afterwards is substantial. Even if you are not automating now, laying a conduit while the ground is open costs very little and preserves the option.

Think through the full control set at the same time: how visitors get in, whether you want an intercom or a video panel, where a keypad goes so it is reachable from a car window, and — importantly — how the gate opens in a power cut. Every automated gate needs a manual release, and everyone in the household should know where it is and how to use it.

Safety, Weight and the Structure Underneath

An automated driveway gate is a large powered moving object, and it deserves to be treated as one. Safety devices are not optional extras — photocells across the opening that stop the gate if something breaks the beam, force limiting so the motor stops rather than pushes, and a clearly accessible manual release. Children, pets and reversing cars all end up in the path of gates.

Sliding gates carry a specific pinch hazard where the gate passes the fixed post and along the run-off run, which is worth thinking about on a property with young children. Swing gates present a crush risk at the closing edge instead. Both are manageable; both need to be considered rather than assumed away.

Underneath all of it, the structure decides whether the gate keeps working. Gate posts carry a permanently offset load and need footings well beyond a standard fence post. Sliding gates need a properly founded track or cantilever support that will not settle. A driveway gate is the heaviest, most used and most expensive thing on your boundary — the posts are not the place to save money.

Choosing What Fits Your Driveway

The short version: if your driveway is reasonably level and you have depth to spare between the gate line and the street, a swing gate is simpler and cheaper and there is no reason to overthink it. If the driveway slopes, is short, or a waiting car would sit in the swing path, slide — provided you have the run-off length.

If neither works cleanly, the answer is usually to change the site rather than force the gate: regrade a level pad through the opening, set the gate line further back to create depth, or clear an obstruction from the run-off run. Those are real costs, but they are one-off, whereas living with a gate that fights your driveway is permanent.
