Treat these as ranges rather than figures. The spread within each material is wider than the gap between materials, which is the single most useful thing to understand here — a well-built timber fence in a good position will comfortably outlive a badly built aluminium one in a bad position.
The Post Decides, Not the Cladding
Ask anyone what a fence is made of and they will name the cladding. Ask what fails and the honest answer is almost always the post, at the soil line, where timber passes from wet ground into air. That zone stays alternately soaked and damp, which is precisely the condition rot fungi need.
This has a consequence people find counterintuitive: the material of the palings barely affects how long the fence stands. Palings dry out after rain and are replaceable in minutes anyway. The post is the fence, and its treatment class, depth, hole diameter and drainage set the ceiling on the whole structure's life.
It also means the biggest lifespan decisions are made in the first two days of construction and are effectively permanent once the concrete goes off. You cannot upgrade a post's treatment class later, and you cannot add drainage under a post that is already set.
Your Exposure Moves Every Number

The high-value maintenance is unglamorous: keeping soil and mulch clear of the timber, clearing debris from the base, trimming plants back so the fence can dry, and making sure nothing discharges water onto it. Those take minutes and add years. Re-coating takes a weekend and mostly adds looks.

PVC fails through UV embrittlement, which shows as chalking and colour loss before it shows as cracking, so a fence going chalky is telling you something.
Aluminium mostly does not fail. What ends an aluminium fence is usually impact damage, a discontinued profile that cannot be matched, or the owner simply wanting something different. That is a genuinely different relationship with a fence, and it is what the higher upfront cost buys.
Economic Life vs Physical Life
There is a difference between how long a fence can stand and how long it is worth keeping, and the second number is usually smaller. A fence can remain structurally serviceable while looking tired, needing a repair every year, and dragging down the appearance of a property you might want to sell.
The tipping point is usually repair frequency. One repair in five years is normal maintenance on an ageing fence. Two or three separate repairs within a year or two is the fence telling you its posts are reaching the end together — because they were all installed on the same day in the same conditions and they age at the same rate.
That simultaneity is why fences tend to fail as a group rather than gradually. When the third post goes soft, the rest are usually not far behind, and money spent on individual repairs from that point onward is money you will spend again.
Repair or Rebuild: How to Judge
The test is the posts, and it takes ten minutes. Walk the fence, push firmly at chest height between each pair of posts, and watch the base of each one. Then press a screwdriver into the timber right at ground level on any post that moved. Count how many are soft.
A few soft posts in an otherwise sound fence is a repair, and doing it early is much cheaper than doing it late — while the rails and palings are still sound, a post replacement is contained. Once the fence has leaned and the rails have pulled at their fixings, the job grows into neighbouring bays.
