Quick answer: aluminium fencing is about as low-maintenance as it gets — a wash with mild soapy water two or three times a year (more often near the coast) is really all it needs to stay looking new. There's no rust to treat and no re-painting, so 'maintenance' is mostly just rinsing off salt, dust and grime before they dull the powder-coat finish. Avoid harsh abrasives and you'll keep it looking sharp for decades.

You're Maintaining the Coating, Not the Metal
This distinction explains everything else on this page. The aluminium itself needs no protection from you — it forms its own hard oxide layer and is essentially indifferent to Auckland weather. What you are looking after is the powder-coat finish sitting on top of it, which is what gives the fence its colour and its crisp appearance.
So aluminium maintenance is cosmetic maintenance. Neglect it entirely and you get a fence that looks dull and grubby but is structurally exactly as sound as the day it went in. That is a genuinely different relationship from timber, where neglect shortens the fence's life.
It also tells you what to be careful about. Anything that damages the coating — abrasion, harsh chemistry, high-pressure water at close range — is the real risk. The metal will survive almost anything; the finish will not.
The Basic Wash
Two or three washes a year covers most inland aluminium fences. Hose off loose dirt first so you are not grinding grit into the finish, then wash with warm water and a little mild dish soap using a soft cloth, sponge or soft brush, and rinse thoroughly.
Rinsing properly matters more than people expect. Detergent left to dry on a powder-coat surface leaves a film that dulls it and attracts more dirt, so the rinse is not an optional final step — work in sections and rinse each before it dries, particularly on a hot day.
Work top to bottom so dirty water runs over surfaces you have not cleaned yet rather than over ones you have. And do the gate at the same time, since it collects hand marks that the rest of the fence does not.
Coastal Sites: Rinse More, Scrub the Same
Near the sea, salt settles on every surface continuously, and while it will not rust aluminium it is mildly abrasive, it holds moisture, and it dulls a finish steadily. The answer is frequency rather than effort — a plain hose-down every month or two between proper washes.
Pay attention to the sheltered faces. Rain naturally rinses exposed surfaces, so the areas that accumulate the most salt are the ones rain does not reach: undersides of rails, the backs of slats, the inside of channels, and anywhere the fence is protected by an overhang. Those are exactly the spots a quick pass misses.
This is still dramatically less work than any coastal timber fence, and there is no rust to chase. You are preserving the look, not defending the metal.
What Not to Use
Abrasives are the main hazard — scouring pads, abrasive creams, wire wool and stiff wire brushes all cut into powder-coat, and the damage is permanent and immediately visible as a dulled patch. Once the sheen is gone from an area it will not come back.
Strong alkaline cleaners are the chemical risk, and this one surprises people because they are common household products. Aluminium is attacked by strong alkalis, so heavy-duty degreasers, oven cleaners and some concrete cleaners can etch the metal wherever the coating is already chipped or scratched. Keep them off the fence entirely.
High-pressure washing at close range is the third. It is not that aluminium cannot take pressure — it is that a concentrated jet can drive water behind the coating at any chip or edge, and can force water into fixings and channels where it sits. If you use a pressure washer, keep it wide, keep it moving and keep it well back.
Dealing With Specific Marks
Around pools, sunscreen and tanning products are the common culprit — they leave a stubborn oily film that plain soap struggles with. A slightly stronger mild detergent and patience works; abrasion does not, and this is exactly where people damage the finish trying to shift a mark.
White chalky deposits usually come from irrigation or sprinkler overspray depositing minerals, not from the fence failing. They respond to a mild acidic cleaner suitable for coated surfaces, but test somewhere inconspicuous first, and the better fix is to redirect the sprinkler.
Concrete or mortar splash from nearby work needs dealing with promptly — once cured it is genuinely difficult to remove without damaging the coating. Bird mess and tree sap are also easier wet than dry, so a quick pass early beats scrubbing later. Scuff marks from a wheelbarrow or a mower are often deposited material rather than damage, and will frequently wipe off.
Chips, Scratches and Chalking
A chip that exposes bare metal is cosmetic rather than urgent. There is no rust to spread, and the exposed aluminium simply forms its own oxide layer and stops. Touch it up for appearance and to keep alkaline chemistry away from the bare spot, using touch-up paint matched to the system — note the colour and profile when the fence is installed, because matching years later is the hard part.
Chalking is different and worth recognising. A fine powdery residue on the surface that comes off on your hand is the coating's binder breaking down under UV, and it means the finish is ageing rather than dirty. Washing removes the residue but not the cause.
Light chalking on an older fence is normal and mostly cosmetic. Early or heavy chalking usually says the coating system was not specified for New Zealand UV or for the exposure it is in — useful information if you are considering another fence from the same supplier.
The Hardware Is the Only Real Upkeep
Everything above is optional in the sense that skipping it costs looks. Gate hardware is the one thing that genuinely needs attention, because it is the only part with moving components under load.
Once or twice a year, lubricate the hinges and any moving latch parts, check the fixings are still tight, and clear debris from the closing arc. If the gate forms part of a pool barrier, also test that it still closes and latches unaided from fully open — worn self-closing hinges are the most common way a compliant barrier stops being compliant.
Watch for rust bleed streaking down from fixings. The aluminium is fine; the screws are not, and it means incompatible or under-specified fixings that will eventually fail.
