That mismatch is why gate problems dominate fence complaints. Nobody rings about a paling. They ring because the gate drags on the ground, won't latch without a lift and a shove, has dropped at the latch stile, or has seized solid in the salt air. In almost every case the timber is fine and the hardware was the weak link.
The useful way to think about it is that hardware is not an accessory to the gate — it is the part of the gate that does the work. Spending an extra amount here that looks disproportionate against the total fence cost is one of the highest-return decisions in the whole job.
Hinges: Size Them to the Gate, Not the Post
Hinges carry the entire weight of the gate, and they carry it as a rotating load applied at one edge — which is a far harder job than simply holding something up. The number one rule is to size the hinge to the gate's actual weight and width, and when in doubt go up rather than down.
Width matters as much as weight, and people miss this. A wide gate applies enormous leverage to its hinges even if it isn't especially heavy, because the load acts at the far end of a long arm. A wide lightweight gate can punish hinges harder than a narrow heavy one, which is why wide gates so often need three hinges rather than two.
Adjustable hinges are worth every cent. Timber moves, ground settles, and posts shift a little over years — with adjustable hinges you re-level the gate with a spanner in five minutes. Without them, the same correction means unscrewing and rehanging the whole gate, which is why so many sagging gates simply stay sagging.
The Real Cause of a Dropping Gate
When a gate drops, most people blame the hinges, and sometimes they are right. But there are three other causes worth ruling out, because replacing hinges will not fix any of them.
The first is the post. A gate post carries a permanently offset load pulling it toward the gate, which is a different load case from a normal fence post and needs a deeper, better-concreted footing. If the post itself is leaning, the gate drops no matter what hinges are on it — and the giveaway is that the gap at the top of the latch stile has opened up into a wedge shape.
The second is bracing. A gate frame is a rectangle, and rectangles rack out of square unless something triangulates them. A diagonal brace must run from the bottom of the hinge side up to the top of the latch side, so it works in compression. Fitted the other way it does nothing, and this is one of the most common DIY gate mistakes. The third is simply the fixings — screws into end grain will pull out eventually, however good the hinge.

Latch choice deserves more thought than it usually gets, because it is what makes a gate pleasant or irritating to live with. Start from how the gate gets used: which side you approach from, whether you can reach through, and whether your hands are usually full of shopping, tools or a child.
A gravity latch is simple and reliable and is the default for a standard side gate. A ring latch operable from both faces suits a gate you pass through in both directions. A drop bolt into the ground is what actually holds a double gate steady, because the leading edges have nothing else to fix to. A lockable latch or keyed bolt is the answer where security matters — though be realistic that a gate latch is a deterrent rather than a barrier.
The detail that turns a good latch into a bad experience is alignment. A latch that needs the gate lifted, pushed or persuaded is a latch fighting a gate that has dropped or a striker set in the wrong place. Fix the geometry rather than living with the technique.
Pool Gates: Where Hardware Is Compliance
Around a pool, gate hardware stops being a convenience question and becomes a legal one. A residential pool gate must be self-closing from any position, self-latching, and the latch must sit out of reach of a small child. The gate must open away from the pool area, and the barrier around it must have no footholds in the non-climbable zone.
The self-closing requirement is the part that fails in service. A hinge that closed the gate reliably on day one can weaken, or become obstructed by a stone, a build-up of debris, or a settled path. Materials: Stainless, Galvanised, and What Fails
