Almost every decision about a slat fence flows from one ratio: the width of the gap compared with the width of the slat. A narrow gap relative to a wide slat reads as nearly solid and behaves like a privacy fence with better airflow. An even gap-to-slat ratio reads as a screen. A wide gap reads as a decorative boundary marker that defines space without hiding anything.

People usually arrive with a picture rather than a number, and the picture is doing the ratio work invisibly. The fastest way to get what you actually want is to look at a real fence in the flesh, stand at the distance you would normally stand from your own boundary, and note the proportion. Samples on the ground never look the same as a built run.

The trap is specifying by gap size alone. A 20mm gap between narrow slats is a completely different fence from a 20mm gap between wide slats. Talk in proportions, not millimetres, and the result will match what is in your head.

Here is the thing that surprises most people about slat fencing: it is far more private from an angle than it is straight on. Stand square to the fence and you see through the gaps. Move to one side, and the slats overlap in your line of sight until the fence effectively becomes solid. The privacy is a function of where the viewer is standing, not a fixed property of the fence.

This is genuinely useful when you plan a boundary, because in real life people almost never look at your fence square-on from the middle of your lawn. Neighbours look from their windows and decks, and passers-by look from the footpath as they walk past — which is to say, at an angle. A slat fence can be visually solid from every position that matters and still feel open from inside your own yard.

It also means you can design for a specific problem. If one upstairs window is the issue, work out the angle from that window to the part of your yard you want private, and you can often solve it with slat spacing that would look far too open on paper.

Vertical vs Horizontal: Why Direction Matters

Horizontal slats have dominated design magazines for a decade, and they do look superb on the right house. But vertical slats have practical advantages that are worth knowing before you choose on looks alone.

Water is the first. Vertical slats shed rain down their length and dry quickly. Horizontal slats present an upward-facing edge on every board, which collects water, dust and leaf litter, and stays damp longer — which matters in Auckland's rainfall and is the main reason horizontal timber slats need more attention than vertical ones.

So is fixing method — screws hold a slat's alignment against movement in a way nails do not, and on a fence you will look at every day, that is money well spent.

Coating is the other half. Coating all four faces and both ends before installation, while you can still reach them, dramatically reduces the moisture cycling that causes movement. Once the slats are up, the faces you can no longer reach are the ones that will absorb water unevenly and pull the slat out of true.

Aluminium and Composite Slats

Aluminium slats solve the movement problem completely. Extruded profiles are dimensionally stable, so the lines stay parallel and the gaps stay even for the life of the fence. Combined with a baked-on powder-coat finish and no rust, that makes aluminium the default for coastal sites, pool surrounds, and anywhere the crisp geometry is the whole point.

The trade-offs are cost and character. Aluminium is more expensive per metre, and the finish is uniform in a way some people love and others find cold against a timber-and-weatherboard house. Timber-look powder-coat finishes exist and have improved a lot, but they are still a finish rather than timber.

Composite slats sit in between: more stable than timber, warmer than aluminium, heavier than both, and generally lower maintenance than timber without being maintenance-free. They are a reasonable middle path where you want the timber look without the movement, particularly on a shaded boundary where timber would struggle to dry.

Wind Load, Posts and Why Slat Fences Flex

Slat fences look light, and this leads people to under-build the structure. A slat fence at tight spacing is close to solid as far as wind is concerned, and it carries that load through a frame that has less inherent rigidity than a close-boarded fence. Get the posts wrong and the fence will visibly flex in a gust.

The frame is what most quotes differ on and what most cheap slat fences skimp. Post size, post spacing, footing depth, and the rails the slats fix to all decide whether the fence stays true.
